A private iLovePDF alternative for merging PDFs
iLovePDF is a broad online PDF toolkit. This page compares one job — merging PDFs without uploading them — and explains how SmaftyTools does that job locally in your browser.
The practical difference is where the file goes. iLovePDF processes the merge on its servers, so the PDFs are uploaded first. SmaftyTools runs the merge in the page with pdf-lib, so the files stay on your device.
This is a guide, not a second merger. The working tool is the SmaftyTools Merge PDF page; this comparison explains the trade-off before you choose.
SmaftyTools vs iLovePDF for merging PDFs
| Detail | SmaftyTools | iLovePDF |
|---|---|---|
| Processing location | Inside your browser tab, using pdf-lib. The PDF bytes never leave your device or reach SmaftyTools. | Uploaded to iLovePDF's servers and processed in its cloud; iLovePDF says processed files are deleted within two hours. |
| Signup | None. There is no account, email address or usage limit to create. | Optional. iLovePDF's terms list a free unregistered account alongside a registered free account, so you can try the free service without registering. |
| Watermark | None added. The merged PDF is the same page content you supplied, copied into one file. | Not stated in iLovePDF's public help pages. Check the downloaded file before relying on the output. |
| Offline behavior | After this page has loaded, the merge runs locally and keeps working if the connection drops. | Web merging depends on an internet connection to upload the PDFs and download the result; iLovePDF offers a separate Desktop app for offline processing. |

How browser-side PDF merging works
When you add a PDF, the browser reads the file into memory as bytes. pdf-lib parses each document, copies its pages into a new in-memory PDF, and writes the result as a download. No server endpoint receives the file, because the merge never needs one.
The page itself still loads over the network like any website, and analytics may load as usual. Those requests do not contain your PDF. To check, open your browser's Network panel, start a merge and look for an upload request carrying the file — there is none.
The merge copies page content rather than recompressing it. Text and images therefore keep their original quality, while some interactive form fields or internal bookmarks may not carry over to the combined file.
When each tool fits
Choose iLovePDF when you want one account for many PDF jobs beyond merging — its help documentation lists conversion, compression, editing, signing, OCR and other tools — and uploading the files to a cloud service is acceptable for your document.
Choose SmaftyTools when the PDFs should not leave your device, when you do not want an account, or when you want a merge with no upload step. The local workflow also keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.
How to merge PDFs without uploading them

- Add two or more PDF files from your device. They stay in the browser tab.
- Drag the files into order, or use the up and down buttons, then remove any file you added by mistake.
- Click "Merge & download PDF" to save the combined file from your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is SmaftyTools a free alternative to iLovePDF?
Yes, for merging PDFs. SmaftyTools merges files locally in your browser with no account, no upload and no watermark. iLovePDF remains the broader suite if you also need conversion, OCR, signing or a desktop app; this page compares only the merge job.
Does iLovePDF upload my PDFs?
Yes. iLovePDF's help pages describe files being stored on its servers while they are processed and say processed files are deleted within two hours. SmaftyTools works the other way: the PDF bytes are read by the browser and never sent to a server.
Can I merge PDFs without uploading them?
Yes. Open the Merge PDF page, add the files and set their order. The merge code runs inside the page, so no upload request carries the PDFs. You can confirm this in your browser's Network panel: the merge itself creates no upload request.
Does browser-side merging reduce PDF quality or add a watermark?
No recompression is applied and no watermark is added. Pages, text and images are copied into the merged document, so visual quality stays the same and the merged size is roughly the sum of the sources. Some interactive form fields or internal bookmarks may not carry over.
